PHS/EHD has
the following comments for your consideration.
The work plan proposed to install two monitoring wells to supplement MW3 and
MW4 with screened intervals below the groundwater table. The work plan
indicated that the proposed wells would be drilled to 90 feet and that 30 feet of
screened casing would be installed. The last reported depth to the water table was
approximately 64 feet. Even if 30 feet of screened casing would be approved, the
well would only have approximately 4 feet of screened interval in the capillary
fringe or vadose zones. PHS/EHD recommends that no more than 20 feet of
screened casing be used to construct wells and that the screened interval be
placed 10 feet in water and 10 feet above water. Monitoring wells, MW3 and
MW4 are constructed with screened intervals between 100 feet and 80 feet.
Since the proposed wells are to supplement MW3 and MW4, it will not be
necessary to overlap the depths of the screened intervals. Please note that the
construction of additional monitoring wells as proposed is not approved.
Also, MW3 and MW4 are located approximately 40 feet from the former tank
location. PHS/EHD recommends that the proposed wells be placed in an
intermediate location so that both soil and groundwater information can be
obtained. Soil boring, 61, drilled in July 1988 and sampled at 30 feet did not
indicate soil contamination. However, the lateral extent of soil contamination may
be less than 60 feet surrounding the former tank area.
A Division of San Joaquin County Health Care Services
