PUBLIC HEALTH SERVICES
SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY =.
N; X
JOGI KHANNA M.D„M.P.H :.
Health Officer
P.O. PHS/EHD has prepared the following comments for your consideration.
The report included the results of the recent investigation during which two additional
monitoring wells were installed and all on-site wells sampled. Soil samples were collected
at 30', 45' and 85' during installation of MW3 and MW4. Soil contamination was detected
only in the sample collected at 45' during the installation of MW4 and consisted of 0.43 ppm
bromomethane.
Groundwater contamination was detected in all on-site wells containing sufficient water to
sample, MW2, MW3, MW4 and the domestic well. The monitoring wells were sampled on
October 4, 1993 under PHS/EHD inspection; however, the domestic well was sampled on
October 12, 1993 without PHS/EHD inspection. The groundwater samples from the
monitoring wells were analyzed utilizing EPA Method 602 and indicated that the wells were
impacted by petroleum hydrocarbon contamination. The groundwater sample from the
domestic well was not analyzed utilizing EPA Method 602 therefore, petroleum hydrocarbon
contamination was not evidenced. The results of analysis utilizing EPA Method 601
evidenced halogenated volatile organic contamination which is likely not associated with the
former leaking underground storage tanks.
The report included conclusions and recommendations which indicated that the extent of soil
contamination had been defined and that one vadose-zone well would be sufficient to
remediate the documented soil contamination by utilizing either vapor extraction or in-situ
bioremediation. Please submit by February 15, 1994, a work plan to install the proposed
vadose-zone well and a description of a minimum of three possible soil remediation methods
and the preferred alternative.
A Division of San Joaquin Counry Health Care Services
