The purpose of the field
investigation is to determine the horizontal and vertical extent of soil contamination and to
determine if groundwater has been impacted by the release of petroleum products from the
former waste oil UST.
1.1 SITE BACKGROUND
On 1 July 1996 Roy F. Weston, Inc. (WESTON) collected a soil sample from underneath the
waste oil UST fill line and a second sample from the fill line excavation stock pile. Organic
analytes were not detected in these samples. On 18 October 1996 WESTON supervised the
removal of the waste oil UST. During the UST removal WESTON collected a soil sample from
the base of the excavation and from the soil stock pile. Organic analytes detected in the sample
collected from the bottom of the excavation (7 feet below ground surface) included benzene at
20 ug/kg, toluene at 2,100 ug/kg, ethylbenzene at 1,100 ug/kg, total xylenes at 7,700 ug/kg, and
purgable hydrocarbons as gasoline at 3.3 mg/kg.
In a letter dated 26 February 1997 the San Joaquin County Public Health Services (PHS)
required that Pep Boys submit a work plan by 2 June 1997 for an investigation to determine if
. groundwater was impacted and the horizontal and vertical limits of soil contamination. In a 10
March 1997 telephone conversation with WESTON, Mr. Infurna of PHS indicated that during
an investigation of a BP station located down gradient of Store #711 xylene and ethylbenzene
were detected in groundwater at a depth of 65 feet and that Pep Boys is a possible source of the
contamination. Mr. Infurna also indicated that the groundwater table at Store #711 is about 45
feet below ground surface (bgs) and flows towards the northeast.
1.2 SCOPE OF WORK
The scope of the field investigation includes:
1) Obtain drilling permits from PHS.
2) Notify Underground Service Alert to mark buried utility lines in the vicinity of Store
#711.
3) Collect soil and groundwater samples from 4 direct push sampling locations.
`- 4) Prepare a final report.
UPROJECfSTEPBOYSMP 1 January 1997
V
