Wetmore Street
Manteca CA 95336
San Joaquin County Public Health Services, Environmentall Health Division (PHS/EHD) has reviewed the
Monitoring Well Installation and Quarterly Report— Second Quarter 2001 dated June 13, 2001 that was
prepared on your behalf by Advanced GeoEnvironmental, Inc. (AGE) and has the following comments. '
The report documents site fieldwork that took place on April 5, 2001 when four shallow groundwater
monitoring wells were installed. The wells were installed as part of the investigation of the vertical and
lateral extent of the petroleum hydrocarbon contamination that was discovered at this site following the
removal of three underground storage tanks in August 1999. Soil samples for analysis were collected
during the advancement of the boreholes. The wells were developed on April 10, 2001, and groundwater
samples for analysis were collected on April 13, 2001.
As stated in the report, the soil analytical data collected to jate indicate that the vertical and lateral extent
of the petroleum hydrocarbon impact to soil has been fairly dwell defined, with the exception of methyl
tertiary butyl ether(MtBE) in the vicinity of monitoring well #4 (MW-4). The 20-foot below surface grade
(bsg)soil sample from MW-4 had 1,200 milligrams per kilogram (mg/kg) MtBE, and the 25-foot bsg
sample had 97 mg/kg. The groundwater samples were nod-detect for all constituents except for 53
micrograms per liter(lug/1)total petroleum hydrocarbons as diesel in MW-1 and 4,700 lug/I MtBE in MW-4.
The report recommends additional monitoring wells and a boring to complete the assessment of the
extent of the contamination at this site. PHS/EHD agrees with this recommendation. Please submit a
work plan to complete the investigation of the vertical and lateral extent of the petroleum hydrocarbon
contamination at this site to PHS/EHD by August 20, 2001.1 In addition, quarterly groundwater monitoring
and sampling should continue until directed otherwise by P S/EHD.
If you have any questions or comments please call Lori Duncan at(209)468-0337.
Donna Heran, REHS, Director
Environmental Health Division
Gt
Lori Duncan,Duncan, Senior REHS Dot Lofstrom R.
