Soil samples will be collected at approximately 1 foot below the former
product lines and dispensers using 2-inch-diameter handauger and hand-operated
percussion sampling equipment. The percussion sampler will be equipped with stainless
steel sample tubes and will be driven beyond the bottom of the handaugered borehole. The
sample tube will be sealed with Teflon tape and plastic end°caps and labeled with project
number, sample designation, and sampling date. The sample will be placed in an ice chest
and logged on chain-of-custody documentation. ',, Sampling equipment will be
decontaminated between, sample locations to prevent cross contamination of samples.
Verification soil samples will be submitted to a state-certified analytical laboratory for
I analyses of total petroleum hydrocarbons as gasoline (TPHG) and benzene, toluene,
ethylbenzene, and total xylenes (BTEX) using U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
(USEPA) Modified Methods 8015 and 8020, respectively, oxygenates (methyl tert butyl
ether, tertiary butyl alcohol, di-isopropyl ether, ethyl iertiary butyl ether, and tertiary amyl
methyl ether using USEPA Method 8260, and total lead using USEPA Method 7420.
am
Additional Excavation and Soil Sampling
g •
If warranted, Pinnacle will observe limited overexcavation.1 in the vicinity of the former
product lines and dispenser locations. if field evidence indicates hydrocarbons remain-in
`:,
place Pinnacle will direct the subcontractor to ove.rexcavate until field screening data
(using a photoionization detector [PID]) .of soil samples .;collected from the base and
sidewalls of the excavated area indicate soil containing relatively high concentrations of
hydrocarbons have been removed. Overexcavation 'of soil will be limited to two feet
t
laterally and six feet vertically.
Stockpiled Soil Sampling
Soil generated during the removal of the product delivery lines and dispensers will.be
f temporarily stored on site .and placed on and covered with visqueen. One four point
composite sample will be collected for every 100 .'cubic yards of stockpiled soil.
