The UST was removed in August of 1991. The condition of the tank at the time
of removal was reported as "rusted and pitted" with no holes. Conditions and
methodology of the UST removal are detailed in the attached PHS-EHD's
inspection Form. Four subsurface soil samples were collected during the UST
removal. Two Samples, SS-1 and SN-1, were collected from soils beneath the
ends of the UST at depths of 11 feet below ground surface (bgs). Two additional
samples were collected from beneath the underground piping, P-1 (nearest the
fuel dispensing unit) and P-2 (nearest the UST). The samples were laboratory
analyzed for Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons (TPH-G) and Benzene, Toluene,
Xylenes, and Ethylbenzene (BTXE) compounds. The samples were also analyzed
for Total and STLC Lead. The concentrations detected in all of the analytical
samples, with the exception of P-1, were reported as "below laboratory detection
limits" (ND) with inconsequential amounts of lead. Sample P-1 reported
concentrations of TPH-G at 280 mg/kg and BTXE compound concentrations
ranging from 1.9 to 55 mg/kg. Laboratory analytical results are attached.
Subsequent to UST and piping removal, the excavations were backfilled with
native and borrowed fill and resurfaced.
On September 16, 1997, approximately three cubic yards of material were
excavated at the P-1 sample location, exposing a 4-inch diameter metal sewer line
which was punctured during excavation. The excavated soil (stockpile), which
was placed on plastic sheeting, exuded a hydrocarbon odor. On September 17,
1997 Mr. Ron Rowe of PHS-EHD was contacted and an onsite meeting was
conducted with Mr. Rowe, Mr. Reeder , and TreaTek's representative. It was
decided that a Workplan detailing a Limited Site Investigation should be
prepared to in part satisfy the "Correction Actions Regulations" as required by
PHS-EHD.
Proposed Scope of Work
TreaTek proposes to collect three soil samples from the present UST excavation
area. Two samples will be collected from the existing excavation and one from
the stockpiled soil. TreaTek believes that two samples, one collected from the
excavation sidewall (adjacent/beneath the building foundation) and the other
from the excavation bottom, will be sufficient at this time to assess this relatively
small excavation; because previous samples collected further north (toward the
UST) did not exhibit detectable concentrations of gasoline related compounds.
The excavation samples will be collected as directed by the PHS-EHD
representative. They will be collected by driving a 2 X 6 inch stainless steel
sampling tube into the sidewall and base of the excavation with a manually
operated (hammer driven) coring device. The sampling device will be
disassembled and thoroughly cleaned between sampling events with a
