1
Work Plan for Subsurface Investigation March 23, 1
The Southland Corporation, Store No.21756,Manteca,California Page March 2
2
SOIL SAMPLING AND ANALYSIS
Five soil borings will be installed in the vicinity of the former UST pit to la depth of 25 feet below ground surface
(BGS) using a direct push geoprobe (soil boring depth will be increased if groundwater is not encountered at
25 feet BGS). During the drilling, soil samples will be collected at five foot intervals from surface to maximum
borehole depth and logged using the Unified Soil Classification System by an IT Corporation field geologist,
working under the supervision of a California registered geologist. Soil at each depth interval will be evaluated
on site for relative hydrocarbon content using a field instrument. Samlples collected for laboratory analysis will
be sealed with plastic caps over Teflon film, taped, labeled, placed once and sent to a state certified laboratory
under chain of custody. These will be analyzed for benzene, toluene? ethylbenzene, total xylenes, MTBE and
total petroleum hydrocarbons as gasoline (TPH-g) following EPA method 8020/8015(modified). MTBE will be
confirmed using EPA method 8260. All sampling equipment will be cleaned between sampling intervals using
detergent and rinsed with deionized water. Boreholes will be back filled to grade with bentonite.
t
1
GROUNDWATER SAMPLING
Groundwater is estimated to be 20 feet BGS at this site. Groundwater samples will be collected from each
borehole, sealed, labeled, placed on ice and send to a state certified laboratory under chain of custody. These
samples will be analyzed for BTEX, MTBE and TPH-g using EPA method 8020/8015(modified). MTBE will be
confirmed using EPA method 8260.
REPORTING AND-REQUEST FOR CLOSURE .i
IT Corporation will prepare a report summarizing the data collected sunder the scope of work detailed above.
i
The report will document the methods and results of the work, summarize laboratory analytical results and
include appropriate maps.
IT Corporation, on behalf of the Southland Corporation, will request site closure pending the outcome of the
soil and water sample analytical results. If closure is not warranted, a work plan for the installation of
monitoring wells and a quarterly monitoring and sampling plan will b'submitted to the SJCEHD.
i
I
f
1
i
:I
i
I
I
