02 March 2005
• AGE-NC Project No 97-0333
2 1 GROUND WATER EXTRACTION-TREATMENT OPERATION
During the fourth quarter 2004,extraction well EW-1 was adjusted at the well-head to continuously
extract ground water at a flow rate of approximately 5 gallons per minute (GPM) All extracted
ground water was routed through four 2,000-pound media vessels containing liquid phase granular
{ activated carbon (GAC) Following treatment, water was discharged underground via 2-inch
diameter polyvmylchlonde(PVC) piping to the City of Manteca sewer system, discharge piping is
connected to a sewer manhole located approximately 25 feet south of the pump-and-treat system
' Based on effluent flow meter readings (Table 1), approximately 300,491 gallons of treated water
were continuously extracted and discharged to the City of Manteca sewer system between
15 September and 30 December 2004 under City of Manteca Public Works Department(CMPWD)
Industrial Wastewater Discharge Permit No 02-1
2 2 GROUND WATER EXTRACTION-TREATMENT SAMPLING PROCEDURES
Ground water extraction and treatment influent, intermediate, and effluent water samples were
' collected on a monthlybasis from valved ports located upstream(influent), after the third treatment
media vessel(intermediate,GAC-3),and downstream(effluent)of the treatment unit The grab water
1 samples were collected utilizing 40-milliliter(ml) EPA-approved volatile organic analysis (VOA)
vials containing 0 5 ml 18%hydrochloric acid solution as a sample preservative, and 1-liter amber
bottles with no preservative Care was taken to ensure that visible air bubbles were not present in the
vials after filling and capping Ground water sample containers were labeled with the sample
designation, date, time, and sampler's initials
1 23 LABORATORY ANALYSIS OF GROUND WATER EXTRACTION AND TREATMENT
' Influent, intermediate(GAC-3),and effluent grab water samples were logged on a chain of custody
form, placed in a chilled container, and transported to a California Department of Health Services
(DHS)-certified laboratory to be analyzed for
' • Total petroleum hydrocarbons quantified as gasoline, diesel, and motor oil(TPH-g,TPH-d,
and TPH-mo, respectively) by EPA Method 80 1 5'Modified,
• Benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and total xylenes (BTEX) and fuel oxygenates methanol,
ethanol, tetrachloroethene (PCE), trichloroethene (TCE), 1,2-dichloroethane (1,2-DCA),
' ethylene dibromide(EDB),tertiary butanol(TBA), di-isopropyl ether(DIPE),ethyl tertiary-
butyl ether(ETBE),tertiary-amyl methyl ether(TAME),and MTBE by EPA Method 8260B,
• and _
' Advanced GeoEnvironmental,Inc
