u k/
to dispersal. Recirculating textile media litters are widely accepted; relatively compact;
provide a high level of treatment. and are relatively simple to operate and maintain. As
described above, primary treatment will be accomplished bN the collection system septic
tanks.
The textile filters are more area efficient than sand or gravel filters, because the textile
media has approximately five times more surface area. The recirculating filters produce
higher quality effluent and provide greater nitrogen removal than intermittent filters.
Effluent from recirculating textile lnediaTilters tYgically exceed second,,m, treatment
standards; even during peal:flow conditions. The filter can be operated in two modes to
provide different amounts of nitrogen reduction. The filter discharges treated wastewater
at timed intervals throe-ahout the day.
Orenco Systems incorporated(Orenco) manufactures the AX-100 recirculating textile
media filter for use at commercial facilities and small communities. The Orenco
AX-100 units are eight feet wide and 16 feet long(1211 ft2 area) and have a depth of four
feet. The units are prefabricated of fiberglass. The AX-100 filter units are installed at
grade and can be landscaped to mimic an open space area-
The filter units can be installed in clusters in the development as opposed to a central
location, which ows a greater flexibility in the siting of wastewater treatment and
dispersal infrastructure. The ability to cluster the filter units reduces the cost of the
treatment system during early project phases because the entire treatment system:is not
required to be constructed during the first phase. In addition, the filter units can be
located in the development to minimize the amount of pumping required to convey
wastewater from residences to treatment and dispersal facilities.
Approximately 36 AX-100 filter units are required to treat the design flow of
120,000 gpd, corresponding to a hydraulic loading rate of 25 gpd/ft:!. The AX-100 filters
are expected to produce an effluent of appropriate quality for subsurface drip dispersal
and will meet regulatory requirements placed on the system. The system_cari be operated
at flow rates as ow as 1,000 gpd by applying wastewater to a single filter unit.
Textile media filters are designed to treat wastewater that has had solids removed, and
therefore do not generate significant sludge. Solids removed in the collection system
septic tanks will have to be pumped as described above. The septic tanks should be
inspected annually and pumped as needed. Assuming the septic tanks require pumping
every ten years, the prorated sludge volume is approximately 25,000 gallons per year.
The septic tanks may be pumped by a conventional septic tank service and would not
require additional sludge handling equipment or disposal.
The operation and maintenance(O&M) of recirculating textile media filters is not
complex, and will not re uire daily onsite monitorin,The system can be operated and
maintained through a remote telemetry based monitoring system and weekly maintenance
visits to the system.
Decentralized'freatlnent for Lin Fainily 7 5AB038100
December 2008 N:1SPJ3t138100117acuments12008121y_Linl'rop1 W L)ratl.&c
