Expired DEA -Controlled Pharmaceuticals <br />Pharmaceutical wastes classified by the DEA as "controlled substances" shall be disposed of in <br />compliance with DEA requirements. DEA -controlled pharmaceuticals remain under control of the <br />assigned veterinarian at all times, and are managed in accordance with DEA regulations and Banfield's <br />policies. Expired DEA -controlled pharmaceuticals must be sent to Reliable Pharmaceutical Returns via <br />Federal Express within 90 days, in accordance with Banfield policy. <br />E. Expired Non -Controlled Pharmaceuticals and Pharmaceutical Wastes <br />The remaining expired (non -controlled) pharmaceuticals, empty and intact pharmaceutical bottles, and <br />pharmaceutical waste are managed as hazardous waste and disposal practices are discussed in the <br />Hazardous Waste Management Section of this document. <br />IV. Additional medical Waste Requirements <br />A. Medical Waste Designated Accumulation Area <br />The Designated Accumulation Area is any area on site that is used by the hospital for the storage of <br />medical waste prior to pick up by a medical waste hauler. The Designated Accumulation Area must be <br />secured so as to deny access to unauthorized persons and must be marked with warning signs on, or <br />adjacent to, the exterior of entry doors. The warning sign(s) must say "CAUTION — BIOHAZARDOUS <br />WASTE STORAGE AREA — UNAUTHORIZED PERSONS KEEP OUT" in both English and Spanish. <br />B. Medical Waste Accumulation Times <br />In the event biohazardous Oand/or pathology waste is generated, a special pick up should be requested <br />for disposal as soon as possible and storage should not exceed 30 days for less than 20 pounds and 7 <br />days for 20 pounds or more. All sharps waste must be disposed of within 30 days of the container being <br />closed and placed in the Designated Accumulation Area. Expired, damaged, recalled, empty or unused <br />DEA -controlled pharmaceuticals must be sent to Reliable Pharmaceutical Returns within 90 days.
