Waste Pharmaceuticals Waste pharmaceuticals consist of unused dispensed drugs (such as propofol), dropped or discarded pills, non -controlled pharmaceuticals from damaged containers, spilled drugs, or any other pharmaceutical that is unusable, with the exception of expired non -controlled pharmaceuticals (see above) or DEA - controlled pharmaceuticals, which are managed in accordance with DEA requirements. The bag should be sealed, labeled with contents, and placed in the Propofol Hazardous Waste Container. The bag and cat litter can be reused for the specific pharmaceutical (i.e., propofol is the only drug that goes in the propofol bag) until the litter is saturated. The empty sharp or broken glass bottle should be disposed in the sharps container. Solid pharmaceuticals should not be mixed with the propofol or other liquid pharmaceutical and kitty litter, but instead should be placed directly into a small sealable plastic bag (1.5 inch by 2 inch bag), labeled, and placed in the Propofol Hazardous Waste Container.
