Hazardous Waste Management Section
Pharmaceutical Hazardous Waste Container. The expired drugs must remain in this container until
picked up by the waste disposal vendor.
B. Waste Pharmaceuticals
Waste pharmaceuticals consist of unused dispensed drugs (such as propofol), dropped or discarded pills,
non -controlled pharmaceuticals from damaged containers, spilled drugs, or any other pharmaceutical
that is unusable, with the exception of expired non -controlled pharmaceuticals (see above) or DEA -
controlled pharmaceuticals, which are managed in accordance with DEA requirements. Waste
pharmaceuticals may have any of the hazardous characteristics, except reactivity. As a matter of policy,
Banfield will dispose of all non -controlled pharmaceutical waste as hazardous waste.
Container:
om
RX
THIS CONTAINER MUST
REMAIN CLOSED
EXCEPT WHEN IN USE.
Stora e: For waste liquid pharmaceuticals, such as propofol, fill a sealable plastic bag (9 inch by 11 inch)
halfway with cat litter and discharge the liquid from the sharp or damaged container into the bag. The
bag should be sealed, labeled with contents, and placed in the Propofol Hazardous Waste Container.
The bag and cat litter can be reused for the specific pharmaceutical (i.e., propofol is the only drug that
goes in the propofol bag) until the litter is saturated. The empty sharp or broken glass bottle should be
disposed in the sharps container. Solid pharmaceuticals should not be mixed with the propofol or other
liquid pharmaceutical and kitty litter, but instead should be placed directly into a small sealable plastic
bag (1.5 inch by 2 inch bag), labeled, and placed in the Propofol Hazardous Waste Container.
C.
