Hazardous Waste Contingency Plan
California hazardous waste regulations require SQGs to maintain a Contingency Plan consisting of
posting the following information near the phone:
• Name and number of emergency coordinator
• Location of emergency equipment
• 911 or local Fire Department number
The emergency coordinator must be able to reach the hospital in a short period of time and has the
responsibility to coordinate emergency response measures. The emergency coordinator is the Field
Director for the hospital.
G. Hazardous Waste Emergency Response Procedures
As a small quantity generator of hazardous waste, the hospital must maintain a means of internal
communication, a phone, a fire extinguisher, and spill control and decontamination equipment. The
internal communication requirement is met by use of verbal communications, as the hospitals are small
in area.
In the case of an emergency, the following procedure should be followed:
• In the event of a fire, call 911.
• In the event of a spill, contain the spill as quickly as possible if it is safe to do so. If the spill
cannot safely be contained, call 911.
• Determine what PPE is to be used, depending on size and location of the spill (gloves, gown,
mask and eyewear are recommended, but booties may be necessary if a spill on the floor is
large.)
• Liquids should be absorbed with cat litter and the material should be placed into a sealable
plastic bag.
• The plastic bag should be labeled with the contents and the bag placed in the Propofol
Hazardous Waste Container or Formalin Waste Container, depending on the material spilled.
`~d-#' 14
Banfield
w j' a-1oSPIT L
