Labeling Sharps and Medical Waste <br />Sharps containers, bags and containers used for medical waste shall be labeled in accordance <br />with OSHA's Bloodborne Pathogens Standard with the international biohazard symbol: <br />Packaging/shipping box is properly labeled according to DOT hazardous materials/regulated <br />medical waste regulations. <br />The shipping box is labeled with transporter, permit number, and 24-hour emergency contact <br />number. <br />V. MEDICAL WASTE PACKAGING AND LABELING PROTOCOL <br />Precautions: <br />1. DONOT overfill or compress waste. Lids must fit down tightly. <br />2. Always keep containers secured from unauthorized persons. <br />3. Persons preparing this waste for shipment must follow packaging instructions. <br />4. USE SAFE LIFTINGTECHNIQUES as container can be heavy. <br />5. Comply with applicable laws and regulations regarding filling, handling, transport, <br />and tracking of this product. <br />VI. MEDICAL WASTE STORAGE <br />All storage of full sharps containers and medical waste at this hospital is indoors in the <br />maintenance area. Medical waste storage areas are constructed of smooth, easily cleanable <br />materials that are impervious to liquids. These areas will be regularly maintained in a <br />sanitary condition. The storage area will be vermin/insect free. Any medical waste that <br />causes nuisance conditions shall be packaged and shipped within 48 hours. <br />Page 3 of 9 <br />
