Medical Waste Management Section
Spills are to be cleaned up immediately or as soon as feasible using the following method :
® Follow instructions included with cleanup kit .
® Determine what PPE is to be used, depending on size and location of spill ( gloves, gown, mask
and eyewear are recommended , but booties may be necessary if the spill on the floor is large ) .
® For fluid spills on a hard surface, place absorbent over the spill to absorb fluid , If the spill
contains broken glass, do not pick up glass with your hands . If the spill has dried , soak with
disinfectant first .
® Use scraper and scoop to pick up solids or absorbed fluid spill ( in cat litter) and place spill, scoop,
and scraper into biohazard bag or container. Broken glass, from a medical waste spill ONLY
( petri dish, glass vial , etc . ), may be placed into this container as well .
® Soak contaminated surface with disinfectant/ cleaner and wipe with clean paper towel in order
to clean , This may need to be repeated .
® Soak again with the disinfectant and let sit according to manufacturer' s instructions . Contact Sharps, Inc . to pick up the waste materials .
Review procedures to determine the cause of this spill and if changes in policy and procedure
need to be made .
® Spills that migrate beyond the client care area (for example, in the waiting area or exterior of
the hospital ) should be reported to the HSE group, after the spill has been cleaned up .
.f 8
cBanfield
tnrte uncDITM
