Hazardous Waste Management <br /> I . Introduction to the Hazardous Waste Management Plan <br /> A . Purpose of the Hazardous Waste Management Plan <br /> This plan is provided to establish procedures and implement policies for storage, management, <br /> transportation , and disposal of hazardous waste at Banfield Pet Hospital ( Banfield ) in accordance with <br /> federal, state, and local regulations . California' s Department of Toxic Substances ( DTSC ) has delegated <br /> authority for hazardous waste regulation implementation and enforcement to local Certified Unified <br /> Program Agencies ( CUPAs ) . Hospitals may receive correspondence and occasionally be inspected by the <br /> local CUPAs . <br /> Be Applicability <br /> This plan is applicable to all activities at Banfield that result in the generation, handling, storage and <br /> disposal of hazardous wastes . This document should be used by all personnel who handle, generate, or <br /> package hazardous waste . As a matter of policy, Banfield will dispose of all non -controlled <br /> pharmaceutical waste, including but not limited to expired pharmaceuticals ( in the original container) , <br /> empty pharmaceutical bottles, unused pharmaceuticals ( i . e . , propofol ), dropped pills, and dust from pill <br /> cutting, as hazardous waste in accordance with this section . <br /> C . Roles and Responsibilities <br /> The Health , Safety and Environment ( HSE ) Group oversees the Hazardous Waste Management Plan . The <br /> HSE Group is able to provide guidance and assistance to hospital personnel on the proper handling, <br /> storage, and disposal of hazardous waste . The Practice Manager is responsible for hazardous waste <br /> management implementation at this hospital . If the hospital does not have a Practice Manager, the <br /> Chief of Staff or other responsible person, as designated by the Field Director, will be responsible for <br /> plan implementation . <br /> Practice Managers ( PMs ) and their hospital staff are responsible for: <br /> ® Adhering to all the procedures in this Hazardous Waste Management Plan . <br /> o Ensuring all personnel complete the required hazardous waste training associated with this plan , <br /> All personnel generating hazardous waste are responsible for reading and complying with the <br /> requirements set out in this plan . <br /> II . Hazardous Waste Management <br /> Hazardous waste regulations require generators of wastes to characterize each waste stream to <br /> determine if it would be considered hazardous due to one of several characteristics or is listed by <br /> process or active ingredient . The categories of hazardous wastes include the following : <br /> ® Ignitability: A liquid with a flash point below 140° F . Waste isopropyl alcohol ( IPA) or Differential <br /> Stain fixative ( methanol ) are examples of potential ignitable wastes at the hospital . <br /> 9 <br /> Banfield <br />
