An exclusion zone <br /> will be established approximately 10 feet around each boring/excavation area . No <br /> unauthorized person shall be allowed within this exclusion area . <br /> 4 . 0 . HAZARD EVALUATION <br /> The following substance (s) or hazards are known at the following concentrations : <br /> SUBSTANCES INVOLVED CONCENTRATIONS <br /> Gasoline and/or Diesel Fuel Unknown <br /> Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) Unknown <br /> Unknown Fuels Unknown <br /> The primary hazards of each are identified as follows : <br /> • Hydrocarbon fuels and Volatile Organic Compounds - Components of fuels are <br /> colorless liquids with strong aromatic petroleum hydrocarbon - like odors . They are <br /> flammable and have low solubility in water . Exposure to these materials in excess <br /> of recommended exposure limits can cause mild eye , nose , and throat irritation <br /> and can produce a narcotic effect on the central nervous system . Symptoms of <br /> exposure at these concentrations include headache , nausea , drowsiness , <br /> dizziness , and loss of coordination . Certain components of gasoline ( BTEX etc. ) <br /> are known or suspected carcinogens . <br /> Symptoms of exposure to skin can include redness , itching , blistering , and pain . <br /> Prolonged exposure can result in the removal of natural protective oils from skin resulting <br /> in irritation , dryness , cracking and dermatitis . Likewise , extended dermal contact can <br /> result in second - and third -degree chemical burns . Contact of PCE vapors above 75 ppm <br /> with the eyes will result in irritation , redness , and pain . <br /> The additional potential hazards include : Slip -trip-fall hazards , noise , heavy equipment <br /> ( i . e . , backhoe or excavator) , vibration hazards , traffic hazards , etc . <br /> 5 . 0 .
