An exclusion zone will be established approximately 10 feet around each boring/excavation area . No unauthorized person shall be allowed within this exclusion area . 4 . 0 . HAZARD EVALUATION The following substance (s) or hazards are known at the following concentrations : SUBSTANCES INVOLVED CONCENTRATIONS Gasoline and/or Diesel Fuel Unknown Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) Unknown Unknown Fuels Unknown The primary hazards of each are identified as follows : • Hydrocarbon fuels and Volatile Organic Compounds - Components of fuels are colorless liquids with strong aromatic petroleum hydrocarbon - like odors . They are flammable and have low solubility in water . Exposure to these materials in excess of recommended exposure limits can cause mild eye , nose , and throat irritation and can produce a narcotic effect on the central nervous system . Symptoms of exposure at these concentrations include headache , nausea , drowsiness , dizziness , and loss of coordination . Certain components of gasoline ( BTEX etc. ) are known or suspected carcinogens . Symptoms of exposure to skin can include redness , itching , blistering , and pain . Prolonged exposure can result in the removal of natural protective oils from skin resulting in irritation , dryness , cracking and dermatitis . Likewise , extended dermal contact can result in second - and third -degree chemical burns . Contact of PCE vapors above 75 ppm with the eyes will result in irritation , redness , and pain . The additional potential hazards include : Slip -trip-fall hazards , noise , heavy equipment ( i . e . , backhoe or excavator) , vibration hazards , traffic hazards , etc . 5 . 0 .
