Hazardous Waste Management <br /> OVERVIEW <br /> Federal, State, and Local laws regulate the handling, storage and disposal of Hazardous Waste. The <br /> disposal of any Hazardous Waste into the storm drain system, toilet, sinks, floor drains, or in the regular <br /> trash containers, bins and dumpsters is strictly forbidden. <br /> The purpose of this manual is to provide guidance in the safe, proper handling, management and storage of <br /> Hazardous Waste. Topics covered include: <br /> • What is Hazardous Material / Hazardous Waste <br /> • Training requirements per 99¢ Only Stores' policy <br /> • Hazardous Waste accumulation totes and required labels <br /> • Proper labeling of Hazardous Waste Totes <br /> • Types of Hazardous Wastes <br /> • Proper clean-up procedures for Hazardous Waste spills <br /> • Hazardous Waste Pick up process (by Hauler) <br /> • Required Documentation <br /> • Hazardous Waste Inspection Reporting <br /> Every 99er is responsible for ensuring Hazardous Waste is handled properly, in accordance with the <br /> procedures set forth in this manual. <br /> WHAT IS CONSIDERED A HAZARDOUS MATERIAL / HAZARDOUS WASTE <br /> A Hazardous Material is any substance that exhibits one of the following characteristics and if not handled <br /> properly, can cause injury to humans or the environment. <br /> ✓ Ignitable (Material that is flammable) ✓ Corrosivity (High or Low pH) <br /> ✓ Toxic (Poisonous) ✓ Reactivity (Explosive, can enhance fire) <br /> Hazardous Waste is a Hazardous Material that is spilled, broken, damaged, or otherwise becomes <br /> unsellable or unusable for its intended purpose. <br /> TRAINING REQUIREMENTS <br /> Store Management is responsible for ensuring each 99er has received training on the safe and proper <br /> handling and storage of Hazardous Waste. <br /> • Store Management must attend Hazardous Waste training annually. <br /> • All 99ers must receive training on the proper handling of Hazardous Waste. (Training must be <br /> relevant to their responsibilities) <br /> • Newly Hired 99ers must be trained within 10 days of their date of hire. A new 99er may not handle <br /> Hazardous Waste in any way until they have been trained to do so. <br /> • A Training Roster must be used to document each training session. The training roster should be <br /> submitted to Human Resources and a copy should be filed at the store in the Hazardous Waste <br /> Management Binder.
