LINDEN-PETERS FIRE DISTRICT
FIRE PREVENTION BUREAU M
P.O. Flood Rd.
Linden, CA. 95236
RE: Water Supply for Fire Protection at the Linden Site
Dear Mr. Jessup,
As a result of the fire at your facility on the evening of September 20, 1997, Fire
Chief Ernie Moore and I have met to discuss the problems we faced with the existing
water supply available for fire fighting. As you are aware the fire occurred in the
evening with lower temperatures and higher humidity than during daytime hours. If this
fire had started in mid or late afternoon and with higher wind conditions we all know
that this could have been a very devastating situation, resulting in a great loss of
product for your company and potential for injury to fire fighters.
Even though the fire was relatively small in size, compared to the size of the
facility, it took numerous fire fighting hose lines to eventually control and extinguish.
With just 3- 1 1/2" hose lines in use the available on site water could not keep up with
the demand. Using water tender shuttles, 2 from our dept. and 1 of yours, the supply
was inadequate. This situation also left the rest of our fire district without the use of our
2 water tenders in the event of another fire.
Not only do you have a loss potential in the raw stored product You also have
a loss potential in 3 large buildings and 3 smaller buildings at this site. Totaling approx.
48,500 sq. ft. The largest building is approx. 19, 200 sq.ft. If you were to build this
facility new the fire flow requirement for the buildings alone would be a minimum of
3,000 gallons of water per minute (gpm). Water requirements for the outside storage
area is a minimum of 500 gpm at each hydrant.
We fully realize that yours is an existing facility and we cannot force
improvements on you. However, we feel it is our duty to' inform you of your, potential
fire loss problem and make recommendations that may improve your situation. In'
implementing these recommendations you not only help yourself, but also you reduce
the need for such a large amount of fire equipment to.control a fire.
l
