f: <br /> MEM® <br /> September 26, 1997 <br /> To: Doug Wilson,Supervisor,Unit III <br /> From: Steven Mindt,Sr.RENS,Unit II <br /> Subject: Possible Asbestos land disposal <br /> During an inspection on July 24, 1997,of a cannery feed operation permitted by our <br /> Department,located at 2355 W. Rollerson Road,and owned by Mr. Ted Witt,I noticed a <br /> large pile of what appeared to by commercial brake linings. I asked Mr. Witt what he used <br /> these for and he replied that he used them as a road base. I said I would check on whether <br /> that was O.K. I talked to a person at the CIWMB,and at several others at various facilities, <br /> but they were not sure if brake linings are hazardous. On September 22, 1997 another <br /> inspection was done,the pile was being applied to the roadway,Mr. Witt was not around. I <br /> next contacted a brake relining shop. They gave me the number of Bendix(1800-231- <br /> 3726). I contacted a Steve Loiselle at this number. He indicated that there was at least a <br /> 50%chance that these linings contain asbestos. He gave me another number(248)362- <br /> 7232,of a Walter Tar,with product developmentto get more information. He stated that <br /> there is a good chance that there is asbestos in commercial brake linings and should not be <br /> crushed. Since this may be a Hazardous Waste problem,I am referring this problem to your <br /> unit. Enclosed are photos I took on 9/22/97. <br />
