SOIL EXCAVATION PROCEDURES
The soil will be excavated using an excavator and stockpiled on-site, covered by a plastic sheeting.
The excavated soil will be field screened for the presence of volatile organic compounds using an
OVM.
Based on OVM readings and field observations, the excavated soil will be segregated into clean soil
and impacted soil; only soil exhibiting hydrocarbon odors or measured OVM readings will be
disposed to a licenced landfill.
Prior to disposal,hydrocarbon-impactedthe soil will be characterized by CTEL. After soil
p
characterization, trucks will be utilized to transport the waste material for proper disposal.
If ground water as encountered during excavation activities a grab ground water sample will be
collected for analysis by CTEL.
The open excavation area will be surrounded by temporary fencing. No AGE or subcontractor
personnel will be allowed into any excavation greater than five feet bsg until proper excavation
shoring and/or sloping techniques have been emplaced.
4.2. SOIL SAMPLING PROCEDURES
Soil samples collected from the base and/or sidewalls of the excavation will be obtained using the
excavator. Soil samples will be collected from the bucket of the excavating equipment with a metric
soil sampling hammer and one 6 -inch long by 2 -inch diameter brass sleeve, from the excavated soil
material. The exposed ends of the sample sleeve will be covered with Teflon sheets, capped and
sealed with tape.
Soil samples will be collected from soil stockpiles by digging approximately one foot into the soil
stockpile. Soil samples will be collected by hand sampling methods using a stainless steel or carbon
steel trowel, by pressing a metric soil sampling hammer and one 6 -inch long by 2 -inch diameter
brass sleeve into the soil stockpile.
Following sample collection, each sample sleeve will be labeled with the sample location, depth,
time, date and sampler's initials. Appropriately sealed and labeled samples will be placed in a chilled
container under ice and transported under chain -of -custody procedure to CTEL for analysis.
Advanced GeoEnvirontnental, Inc.
