Box 1810
Stockton, CA 95201
REVIEWOF,SECONO QUARTER2000MONITORINGREPORT, CORRAL ROLLQ '
SANITARYLANDFILL,SANJOAQUINCOUNTY(CASENO IN96)
Regional Board staff has reviewed the Corral Hollow Sanitary Landfill, Second Quarter 2000,
Groundwater and Surface Water Monitoring Report, dated 15 July 1999.
The monitoring report indicates an upward trend for volatile organic compounds (VOCs), total dissolved
solids, specific conductance and chloride in MW-5. This trend may be indicative of leachate impact to
groundwater. The county has also reported, however, high concentrations of VOCs in landfill gas near
monitoring well MW-5. Additionally, the county has conducted an evaluation of the extent of VOCs in
the area of MW-5 and submitted the documentation for the evaluation on 31 July 2000. Regional Board
staff is in the process of reviewing that report and will comment separately on it. The county has
reported that a landfill gas collection system is being installed during September and October. The
county has proposed operating the landfill gas collection system while continuing to monitor the
groundwater to determine if collection of the landfill gas has beneficial impacts to the VOCs in
groundwater in the area of MW-5. Future groundwater monitoring reports should therefore also include
adequate documentation of the operation of the landfill gas collection system to facilitate the Regional
Board staff in assessing its potential effects, as well.
I have attached a copy of the Monitoring Report Compliance Checklist that will be included in the case
file for Corral Hollow Sanitary Landfill. Please note the comments included at the end of the checklist.
If you have any questions or comments regarding my review, please call me at (916) 255-3137.
' ao'4-b
t1r ARANO
Associate Engineering Geologist
cc.: Robert McClellon, RENS, Public Health Services, Environmental Health Division
California Environmental Protection Agency
*Recycled Paper
