Geosyntec
consultants
3. SAMPLE HANDLING AND CUSTODY REQUIREMENTS
Collection of environmental samples of high integrity is important to the quality of
chemical data to be generated. To this end, strict field procedures have been developed
that will be employed at various locations during phases of the field investigation.
Detailed field activities for collecting and analyzing samples are described in the Work
Plan. Project field procedures to be used during these activities are provided in the Work
Plan. A summary of criteria to be met during the sample collection process to ensure that
a representative sample is properly collected and transported to the laboratory, such as
sample container types, preservation, and holding time requirements, is provided in Table
C-1.
General sample identification, labeling, handling, and custody requirements are provided
in the Work Plan. COC procedures will be strictly adhered to during sample collection,
transportation, and laboratory handling to assure the integrity of the samples. Improper
sample and data handling and inadequate COC procedures affect the credibility and
acceptability of analytical results, regardless of their accuracy or precision. COC
documentation will document the processing of the sample from the time of collection to
the time of analysis. Samples will be contained and preserved in accordance with the
instructions provided in Table C-1.
3.1 Sample Packaging and Handling
As samples are collected in the field, they will be handled and placed into containers as
specified by the laboratory. Each sample label will specify the analyses to be completed
for that particular container(i.e. volatile organic analysis [VOA] vials to be analyzed for
VOCs by U. S. EPA Method 82606 will be labeled as such, etc.). A list of appropriate
analyses for each sample will be included on a completed sample COC form for the
laboratory. The COCs will include the sample identification, location, date and time of
the sampling, number and type of containers, and a list of analyses to be performed.
Sample documentation will be completed in the field, and the COCs will accompany the
samples through the transportation and analysis. Special care will be taken to pack
containers to minimize breakage.
Quality Assurance Project Plan 4 7 December 2020
