Geosptec° family of Date: March 2020
consultants companies Revisions: 1.0
Health & Safety
HASP/THA Supplement
Field Work COVID-19 General Prevention Measures
Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a new disease, caused by the SARS-CoV-2 (severe acute
respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2). The World Health Organization recently recognized COVID-19 as a
global pandemic, and it is rapidly spreading throughout all regions in which Geosyntec is involved via
community transmission; therefore, it is likely that it may be present in the locations/communities
associated with our field activities.
COVID-19 is thought to spread primarily through person-to-person contact, between people who are in
close contact with one another (within about 6 feet/2 meters), through airborne respiratory droplets
produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes.These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of
people who are nearby or possibly be inhaled into the lungs. A person may also contract COVID-19 by
touching a surface or object that has the virus on it and then touching their own mouth, nose, or possibly
their eyes. Individuals who have contracted the disease and exhibit symptoms can transmit the disease,
and there is also reported evidence that transmission can occur from infected individuals before they
exhibit symptoms, and possibly by infected individuals who never develop obvious symptoms.
Considering the above, mitigation of potential exposure to COVID-19 must consider that apparently
healthy personnel at any work site can be a source of exposure, with no means to monitor or evaluate
that potential in real time. Therefore, the implementation of social distancing protocols represents the
primary means of exposure control, together with personal hygiene measures and workspace sanitation
(already detailed in guidance published by Geosyntec - COVID-19 SharePoint site). In addition, the
following general measures will be implemented for all field site locations:
• Field social distancing - maintain a minimum distance of 2 meters or 6 feet from all other field
staff when possible — if there is a field trailer, minimize time spent in the enclosed areas, the
likelihood of transmission of airborne disease agents will be lessened outdoors (e.g., stay
outdoors for tailgate safety meetings);
• Coordinate with clients, other contractors the prevention measures, and communicate
throughout the performance of field activities;
• Clean workspaces — wipe work surfaces, tools, cell phones, and other commonly-touched
items/surfaces with a disinfecting wipe or cleaning/disinfecting solution' applied with paper
towels at a minimum before and after each day's work. See COVID cleaning and disinfection for
more detail and full disinfection steps. Discard all used wipes/paper towels in normal trash;
'Per the CDC,a solution can be prepared by mixing:S tablespoons(1/3rd cup) bleach per gallon of water,or for
smaller amounts 4 teaspoons bleach per quart of water.
