Box 1810
Stockton, California 95201
Re: Harney Lane Sanitary
Landfill , Ground-
Water Velocity
Dear Mr. Urquhart:
As discussed with you on February 5, 1988 we are providing the follow-
ing information regarding parameters to calculate ground-water veloci-
ty at the Harney Lane Sanitary Landfill .
The formula used to calculate the velocity is based on Darcy's law and
is a follows:
V = ki
where:
v = velocity of ground water
k - hydraulic conductivity of the aquifer
i - hydraulic gradient of the water table
n - porosity of the aquifer
The hydraulic conductivity, k, of the aquifer underlying the site was
not determined during previous subsurface exploration and monitoring
well construction. However, k was determined based on a slug test
conducted in the same aquifer consisting of the same materials at the
proposed landfill replacement site located 1.5 miles east of the
existing site. The test indicated a k - 9 x 10-3 cm/sec which is a
reasonable value for sandy materials as found at the site.
The hydraulic gradient, i , was calculated on the basis of the change
in elevation of the ground-water table across the site.
