Mr. Alan Biederman
Page Two
off-Site Structures:
A newly constructed, migrant labor housing project was located to
the west of the landfill , and some buildings were as close as 40
feet to the waste. These buildings were constructed to
circumvent possible gas buildup within the homes. Approximately
five unoccupied dwellings were tested with the OVA and no
landfill gas was detected in any structures. Two dwellings,
which had gas stoves, registered 30-200 ppm above background.
This was due to pilot lights being extinguished, and having
natural gas from the stoves accumulate in the unventilated
buildings.
Conclusions:
Although landfill gas was detected near structures on and off the
property, there was no indication that gas was migrating into the
buildings on the day of the inspection. The landfill has a gas
monitoring system with ten probes, but the LEA has suggested the
operator install additional probes between the camp and landfill.
Monitoring frequency has yet to be agreed upon by the LEA and the
operator.
Since no gas was detected in any of the structures on and off
site property, the facility is considered to be in compliance
with Section 17705 - Gas Control. Should gas be detected in the
future, additional steps may have to be taken by the operator to
mitigate landfill gas migration at that time.
Sincerely,
Z'" John K.
