SCOPE OF WORK
Permitting and Pre-Field Activities
Kleinfelder will coordinate with the San Joaquin County Public Health Services Environmental
Health Division to obtain necessary boring permits prior to conducting field work. Kleinfelder
will request that the drilling subcontractor contact Underground Service Alert to notify local
utilities of our planned activities.
Field Activities
Shallow Borings
The Tri-Regional Board Staff Recommendations for Initial Evaluation and Investigation of
Underground Tanks, 10 August 1990 guidelines state; for a routine tank removal where water is
not present in the tank pit and the tank is less than 1,000 gallons, ione soil sample is required to
be collected from the fill or pump end of the tank. The soil sample shall be collected from a
maximum of two feet below the bottom of the tank pit excavation. Additionally, one soil sample
is required to be collected for every twenty linear feet of piping.
Because the exact location, depth, and construction at the UST is unknown Kleinfelder proposes
to advance a total of two shallow soil borings to approximately 6 to 8 feet below the ground
surface(bgs)to investigate both ends of the UST. No piping was reported for the site. The UST
is estimated to be less than 4-feet wide and 6-feet long, and buried approximately 6-feet bgs.
Groundwater is not anticipated to be encountered at the site.
The soil samples will be collected by advancing a boring through the use of a hand auger and
manual slide hammer drive sampler. The sampler will be advanced to an approximate total
depth up to#feet below the surface to obtain a soil sample. Soil samples will be obtained by
inserting a sample barrel, lined with a 6-inch stainless steel tube. The sample barrel will be
lowered to the desired sampling depth and driven into the soil. The sample tubes will be removed
and sealed with Teflon film and plastic end caps. The actual sampling locations will be
dependent on access, surface conditions, and potential interference with subsurface utilities.
Samples may not be able to be collected if hardpan soil, gravel beds, or buried debris is
encountered. In the event that refusal occurs, an alternate method of sampling may need to be
exercised.
While sampling, an experienced environmental geologist will classify the subsurface soils
generated by the advancing hand auger. Soil samples will be collected in stainless steel tubes
and sealed with Teflon sheeting and tight fitting plastic caps. Each sample will be individually
labeled and placed in an iced cooler pending transport to the analytical laboratory under chain of
custody protocols. Soil cuttings generated during fieldwork will be stored in a 5 gallon bucket
and left on the site pending the analytical results. The borings will be closed in accordance with
PHS/EHD guidelines by grouting to the surface.
20-YP1-642/2011PI93 Page 2 of 7
Copyright 2001,Kleinfelder,Inc. July 16,2001
