Cone Penetrometer Testing/HydroPuncO (CPT/HPO) technology will be used
because lithological information and samples can be collected without producing soil cuttings
that would require disposal. Initially, lithological information will be collected as the CPT
advances. Two HydroPunch0 samples will be collected from each CPT location. The first
sample will be collected at a depth approximately 3 feet below first groundwater. If the depth to
floating product can be determined, the samples will be collected beneath this layer. The second
groundwater sample at each location will be collected at a depth just above a clay layer or at a
maximum depth of 50 feet bgs. The purpose of this second sample at each location is to
determine if there is a separate phase of TCE or if a vertical distribution of TCE in groundwater
exists. All CPT/HP8 holes will be abandoned by pumping a bentonite/neat-cement mixture
through a tremie pipe from the bottom of the boring.
The groundwater samples will be analyzed for TCE and benzene, toluene,
ethylbenzene, and xylene (BTEX) using U.S. EPA Method 8260 (low level). If necessary to
achieve lower detection limits, U.S. EPA Method 8010/8020 will be used. The anticipated high
concentrations of petroleum hydrocarbons may require sample dilutions in the laboratory,
increasing the detection limit for TCE. The above analytical method that allows the lowest
detection limit for TCE will be the only one reported by the laboratory.
Quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) will include collection of one
equipment blank and one field duplicate sample. Laboratory QA/QC will be performed in
accordance with U.S. EPA SW846 (U.S. EPA, 1986).
6
