Laterals
Lateral pipes are 3-inch diameter(nominal),with a capacity of 60 cfin. Most laterals serve one
well only, with an average flow rate of approximately 5 cfin per well (Table 2). However, because
the flow rate from each well is not known, and because flow rates vary from well to well, it is
assumed that the flow rate from an individual well can be up to four times the average collection
rate, or 19 cfin, for this evaluation(Table 2). This flow rate is much less than the 60 cfin capacity
of the lateral pipe.
In some instances, laterals serve three wells(e.g. E-11, E-6, and E-11). The combined flow rate
from these three wells is assumed to be six times the average well flow rate, or approximately
28 cfin. This flow rate is also much less than the 60 cfin capacity available.
Header
Most of the LFG headers of this system are 6-inch pipes, with a capacity of 375 cfin. This
capacity is much greater than the present flow in those headers, estimated to be approximately 144
cfin based on the header serving the west side of the Primary Site.
All LFG enters the flare station through an 8-inch diameter pipe, with a capacity of 800 cfm. This
capacity is much greater than the present system flow rate of approximately 380 cfin.
Blowers
As previously noted, blower capacity is sufficient if the blowers can provide sufficient vacuum to
all LFG wells. Sufficient vacuum at any well is indicated by the well valve adjusted to restrict the
flow of LFG from the well. Conversely, inadequate vacuum is indicated if any well's valve is full
open but LFG collection is inadequate at that well.
At this time, all LFG well valves are partially closed, indicating that the blowers are providing
sufficient vacuum to fulfill all the needs of the well field under present demand(420 cfin at 144
inches we (inches water column). However, it is useful to evaluate the blowers as an individual
component.
The blowers at the Harney Lane Landfill LFG flare station are Hauck Turboblower Model 061-
251E(Appendix A). These blowers are belt-driven, allowing the operator to vary the speed of the
blower impeller, thus altering the performance of the blower. The speed of the Harney Lane
Landfill blowers has been lowered to reduce power consumption and blower wear. At full design
speed(4400 rpm), each blower has a capacity of 1300 cfin while providing a vacuum of 60-inch
we. This is capacity is much greater than the present system demand (Table 2).
Remediation Plan for LFG Migration 6 San Joaquin County Public Works/Solid Waste
Hamey Lane Sanitary Landfill Revised December 14,2004
