Page 2 <br /> Work Plan <br /> Proiect Name: Olsen (Vernalis) <br /> Project No. 248.2 <br /> January 3, 1995 <br /> housed a pumping station for the Chevron/Standard Oil product pipeline <br /> located near or along the northeastern margin of the site (parallel to highway <br /> 33 and the railroad). This Environmental Assessment is composed of a <br /> modified Phase I and a Phase IIA Environmental Site Assessment (ESA). <br /> The preliminary Phase I ESA is being conducted to evaluate potential nearby <br /> off-site areas of environmental concern as well as delineate areas of <br /> recognized environmental concern that may be present on property to help <br /> us determine locations for exploratory borehole installation. <br /> The purpose of this Phase IIA ESA is to evaluate the presence or absence of <br /> petroleum contamination from past land use. If petroleum hydrocarbons are <br /> present, the lateral and vertical extent of the contamination will not be <br /> investigated at this time. The initial scope of work is to drill four boreholes at <br /> a preselected location (to be determined upon completion of the Phase I ESA), <br /> to groundwater and collect/test selected soil samples. <br /> 2.0 PROPOSED INVESTIGATION <br /> 2.1 Soil Boring Installation <br /> Geological Technics Inc. proposes to install four soil borings (SB-1, 2, 3, & 4) in <br /> the area suggested by the records review to be the remains of the pumping <br /> station and relevant piping runs. Osterberg & Stewart Well Drilling will <br /> perform the soil borings (Lic.# 446670). The soil borings will be drilled using a <br /> 7.25 inch outside diameter continuous flight hollow stem auger to a total <br /> depth to be approximately 40 feet, and not to intercept the groundwater. Soil <br /> cuttings will be stockpiled on site and underlain and covered with 6 mil <br /> plastic sheeting. Soil samples will be collected for geological and analytical <br /> evaluation at five foot intervals. Soil samples will be collected in 6.0 inch <br /> brass liners using a 2.0 inch modified California split spoon sampler. All soil <br /> samples will be sealed with aluminum foil, capped, labeled and placed in a <br /> cooler at 4° Celsius for transport to the laboratory following Chain of Custody <br /> protocol. <br /> Because every soil sample collected will not be submitted for laboratory <br /> analysis, a screening process will be used to gather additional information <br /> through field observation noting sediment type, especially grain size and clay <br /> content; moisture content; visible evidence of contamination, i.e., color <br /> change due to reduction of iron or discoloration from hydrocarbons and other <br /> pollutants, and the readings above background on a organic vapor meter <br /> (OVM).
