® EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
i
Radian International LLC was contracted by the Chevron Pipe Line Company
(CPL)to conduct a limited groundwater investigation at 35275 Welty Road, Vernalis, California
(site). The purpose of the investigation was to determine if trichloroethene (TCE) detected in soil
at the site (GTI, 1996) has impacted groundwater. The TCE was released from a former
condensate outlet pipe. CPL will use this information to facilitate a decision whether or not to
accept environmental responsibility for TCE at the site.
Groundwater samples were collected at three locations. At each location samples
were collected at two depths, one approximately 35 feet below ground surface (bgs) and one at
approximately 50 feet bgs. Each sample was analyzed by U.S. EPA Methods 8010/8020 and
8260.
® No TCE was detected in groundwater(detection limit of 0.4 µg/L). Benzene was
detected at and just above its detection limit in two samples (0.5 and 0.4 µg/L). cis-1,2-
Dichloroethene, a degradation product of TCE, was detected (2.4 pg/L) in one shallow
groundwater sample. The MCL for this compound is 6 µg/L.
1
Data collected in this study indicate that TCE and other chlorinated organic
hydrocarbons have not impacted groundwater. In addition, the presence of cis-1,2-dichloroethene
in one groundwater sample indicates that TCE in soil is undergoing biodegradation, and TCE
concentrations will decrease with time. No further investigation of the extent of TCE is
recommended at this time.
I
1
35275 Welty Road,Vernalis 1 March 1997
i
