1.0 INTRODUCTION
Under contract to Chevron Pipe Line Company(CPL), Radian International LLC
(Radian) completed a limited groundwater investigation as described in the Work Plan for
Groundwater Sampling at 35275 Welty Road, Vernalis, California (Radian, 1997). Vernalis is
located in southern San foaquln County (Figure 1-1).
The purpose of the investigation was to determine if groundwater has been
impacted by trichloroethene(TCE) from historic steel can manufacturing operations at 35275
I
Welty Road (site). CPL will use the results contained in this report to facilitate a decision
[ whether or not to accept environmental responsibility for TCE at the site. Available analytical
data indicate that petroleum hydrocarbons are present in the soil and groundwater at this site. In
addition, TCE associated with non-CPL activities has been identified in soil at the same locations
where petroleum hydrocarbons are present. TCE was not detected in groundwater during
previous investigations; however, during previous investigations the detection limit for TCE was
elevated because of sample dilution.
i 4
35275 Wclty Road,Vcmalis 2 March 1997
11 11
I I
