GEOMATRIX
2.1 SITE SETTING AND VICINITY USE
The site is located in Vernalis, within the Central Valley Physiographic Province of California.
The Central Valley is bound to the west by the Coast Ranges and to the east by the Sierra
Nevada Ranges. The Central Valley subsurface consists of unconsolidated Quaternary sedi-
ments to 400 feet or more below ground surface(VHF, Inc., 1996a).
The site is located at 35275 Welty Road in a rural area used for light industrial activities, and is
bounded by Welty Road to the east and Byron Highway (Highway 33).to the northeast (Fig-
ure 2). The site is bounded on the south, southwest, and southeast by orchards. Currently the
site is used to manufacture containers; historical uses included the production of cans.
The former Old Valley Pipeline (OVP),which transported heavy petroleum (crude and Bunker
C fuel oil) from Bakersfield to Richmond, California, from the early 1900s to the 1960s, was
located along the northeastern side of the site, parallel to the existing Union Pacific railroad
tracks. A Kinder Morgan pipeline is located across Highway 33 within the northern right-of-
way.
ight-ofway.
Also present in the right-of-way was the former Associated Pipe Line(APL) Company's
(predecessor to Texaco and now ChevronTexaco)pipeline that transmitted heavy crude from
the Central Valley to the Bay Area from the early 1990s to the 1970s when it was
decommissioned.
Western Farm Service (WFS) is located directly northeast of the site, and has stored, blended,
and distributed bulk liquid and dry fertilizers since 1969. Western Farm Service operated a
groundwater extraction and treatment system from 2000 through 2001 and is currently con-
ducting a groundwater bioremediation pilot test and quarterly groundwater monitoring.
Reportedly, a former gas station was located northeast of the site.
2.2 PREVIOUS SITE INVESTIGATIONS
Soil and groundwater investigations have been conducted at the site since 1995. During this
period, multiple soil borings were advanced and four groundwater monitoring wells (MW-1,
MW-2, MW-3, and MW-4) were installed at the site to depths of approximately 50 feet below
ground surface (bgs). Results of these investigations indicated the presence of petroleum
hydrocarbons, trichloroethylene (TCE), and 1,1,1-trichloroethane(TCA) in site soil; and
petroleum hydrocarbons and cis-1,2-dichloroethene(cis-1,2-DCE) in groundwater. A summary
of pertinent results of these investigations is provided below. Soil and groundwater sampling
\\oakI\deptdata\Doc_Safc\6000s\6447-DD I\Repnj1\US Can SoiICiW Rpt.doc 2
