Phase IIA Environmentai site Assessment Page 5
Former Karlson Trucking Property
Project No. 191.2
October 28, 1998
3.0 FIELD & ANALYTICAL DATA
3.1 Site Geology and Hydrology
Site Geology Observed During Investigation
The shallow soils encountered during the investigation can be characterized
generally as native (undisturbed) sands and silts and in some cases possibly
sandy fill. The following is an interpretation of the soils observed during the
investigation. Copies of the boring logs are included in Appendix B.
Shallow Soil Sampling-Stockpile
Twenty shallow soil samples were completed to approximately three feet below
the surface of the soil stockpile. The soil encountered included loose dry sand
and unconsolidated gravel and drain rock. No field evidence of hydrocarbon
staining was visible in any of the soil encountered in the borings.
Shallow Soil Sampling-Pole Barn
Ten shallow soil borings were completed to a depth of six feet below ground
surface through the dirt floor of the pole barn. Soil encountered in each of the
borings consisted packed sandy surface material from a depth of about 0-0.5 feet
' below grade. The remainder of the material consisted of fair to poorly graded
brown sands. A minor silt layer was encountered at a depth of about 5.5 feet in
PB-9. Hydrocarbon surface staining was evident in the shallow soil in all of the
borings (0-1' below ground surface). Additionally, faint hydrocarbon odor was
noted at 2-3' in boring PB-3. No odor or staining was evident in soils at depths
greater than T below ground surface in any of the borings.
Hand Auger Soil Boring-Oil Sump
One hand augered soil boring was completed adjacent to the oil sump at the
Property. Soil encountered in this boring included a reddish sand from 0.5-5.5'
in this boring from about 5.5' to 8 feet below grade, the soil consisted of a loose
gravel/baserock material. This was interpreted as being non-native. Beneath
this from about 8' to 10' below ground surface a light grayish brown sand was
intersected. Groundwater was intersected at about 9.5 feet in this boring. No
hydrocarbon odor or staining was noted in any of the soils intersected by this
boring.
Geo-Probe Soil Borings
Seven shallow Geo-Probe soil borings were advanced to a total depth of 16 feet
below ground surface. Samples were collected at the 4-6', 9-11' and 14-16'
interval in each of these borings. Sediments encountered included reddish
2937 VenemanAve.,#B240 Geo-Phase Environmental Inc.
