Site Characterization-Second Event Page 2
Former Karlson Trucking Facility
Project No. 191.2
March 2,2001
in an attempt to define the distal limits of the diesel impacted groundwater. This work
was initially proposed in a Work Plan dated December 13, 2000.
2.0 SOIL & GROUNDWATER INVESTIGATION
2.1 Geo-Probe Boring Installation
Two new Geo-Probe borings were installed on February 5, 2001. These consisted of the
following:
• SB-13 in down-gradient direction from the monitoring well MW-6. This boring was
intended to define the furthest extent of the contamination.
• SB-14 to the southwest of MW-6. The boring was intended to verify the southerly
limit of the distal end of the plume.
Both soil borings were advanced to a total depth of 21 feet. They were drilled using a
1.5" outside diameter Geo-Probe direct push drilling machine owned and operated by V
& W Drilling Inc., of Rio Vista, CA (License #720904). Soil samples were collected for
geological and analytical evaluation from three levels in each boring using a 1.5 inch
diameter by 2 foot long core sampling device fitted with a 1.5" by 2 foot long plastic
liners. Upon completion of each boring, the boring was backfilled with tremied cement
grout. No soil cuttings were generated during the drilling process.
2.2 Soil Sampling
The soil sample collection procedure was as follows:
The end of each plastic tube removed from the coring device and possibly submitted for
laboratory analysis was sealed with Teflon sheets, capped with plastic end caps, secured
with tape, labeled and placed in a cooler at 4° Celsius for transport to the laboratory using
Chain of Custody protocol. Chain of Custody(CofC) forms are documents used to track
the handling of samples. All dates, times, persons and companies handling the samples
were listed from the time the sample was collected to its ultimate disposal.
All soil sampling equipment was decontaminated between uses by washing using Tri-
Sodium Phosphate or Alconox soap in a three-bucket wash system. Nitrile gloves were
worn during sample collection and changed between the collection of each sample.
Soil samples were shipped to Sherwood Labs (DHS #1400), of Hilmar, California, for
analysis. Not all soil samples collected were submitted for laboratory analysis. Field
observations, as recorded in the boring logs, and the purpose of the investigation
suggested which samples were appropriate for analysis.
2937 Veneman Avenue,Suite B240 Geo-Phase Environmental Inc.
