Site Characterization - Second Event Page 9
Former Karlson Trucking Facility
Project No. 191.2
April 27, 2000
A clean dedicated stainless steel bailer was used to collect each sample.
Bailer cleanliness was verified by collecting a bailer blank (pouring distilled
water through the bailer and collecting it in a VOA vial) prior to collecting
the analytical sample. Disposable gloves were worn by the sampling
technician while collecting all samples. The gloves were changed between
the collection of each sample to reduce the potential for cross-contamination.
Water samples were transferred from the bailer into unpreserved 1 liter
amber glass containers (and) 40 ml VOA vials preserved with hydrochloric
acid. Extreme care was exercised during the collection of each sample to
prevent agitation of the water contained in the bailer and during transfer.
All samples were checked for head space bubbles, labeled, inserted into foam
holders and placed in an ice chest cooled to 4°C for transport to the
laboratory.
A chain of custody document, listing all samples collected and their intended
analyses, accompanied the samples from field to the laboratory, thereby
providing a means to track their movement and insure their integrity.
Samples were shipped to Sherwood Labs (DHS# 1400), of Hilmar, California,
for analysis.
Each sample was analyzed as follows using the following EPA methods:
a 3510/8015m - Total Extractable Petroleum Hydrocarbons (TEPH).
In addition, one sample from MW-4 was also analyzed for Polynuclear
Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAH/PNA) by EPA method 8270.
The detection limits for the above analyses are listed on the attached data
tables.
2.2.4 Groundwater Field & Analytical Data
Geo-Probe
Detectable dielectric oil range petroleum hydrocarbons were present in
groundwater samples from SB-8 and SB-9 (0.654 and 0.193 mg/l, dielectric oil
range petroleum hydrocarbons, respectively). In addition, groundwater
samples collected from various levels in SB-10 contained detectable levels of
diesel range petroleum hydrocarbons, specifically:
a 133 mg/1 at 14 feet below grade,
a 2.820 mg/1 at 19 feet below grade,
2937 Veneman Avenue, Suite B240 Geo-Phase Environmental Inc.
