Box 690757
Stockton, CA 95269
WORK PLAN FOR ADDITIONAL INVESTIGATION, FORMER KARLSON TRUCKING,
MANTECA, SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY
We have reviewed the 25 October 2000 semiannual monitoring report submitted by Geo-Phase
Environmental for the former Karlson Trucking (KT) site in Manteca. The report presents the results of
groundwater sampling conducted in October and recommends additional grab groundwater sampling to
define the lateral extent of groundwater pollution by total petroleum hydrocarbons as diesel (TPHd). The
report also recommends onsite disposal of purge water and drill cuttings from well installation in
March 2000.
We concur with the recommendation to collect grab groundwater samples to define the lateral extent of
TPHd pollution in groundwater. Therefore,by 29 December 2000,please submit a work plan for grab
groundwater sampling.
To evaluate the appropriateness of onsite disposal of purge water and drill cuttings, we used Dr. Jon
Marshack's The Designated Level Methodology For Waste Classification And Cleanup Level
Determination (DLM), which is available on our website shown on the letterhead above. The DLM
states that Total Designated Levels (TDL) represent total concentrations of constituents in a solid waste
or total or dissolved concentrations of constituents in a liquid waste which threaten to degrade water
quality if equaled or exceeded. The DLM gives the TDL formulas as follows:
Total Designated Level, Liquid(TDLL) for a constituent of a liquid waste, expressed in milligrams of
total or dissolved constituent per liter of waste:
TDLL (mg/l) = Water quality goal (mg/1)x Environmental Attenuation Factor (EAF)
Total Designated Level, Solid(TDLS) for a constituent of a solid waste, expressed in milligrams of a
constituent per kilogram of waste:
TDLS(mg/kg) = Water quality goal (mg/1)x EAF x Leachability Factor (LF)
LF= Total Concentration/Leachable Concentration
California Environmental Protection Agency
Ca Recycled Paper
