Work Plan—Soil Boring Installation Page 3
Russell Property
Project 191.2
December 13,2000
2.0 PROPOSED INVESTIGATION
The purpose of conducting this work is to define the extreme lateral limit of detectable
hydrocarbon contamination associated with this plume. Geo-Phase Environmental Inc.
proposes to install two Geo-Probe soil borings to collect soil and groundwater samples from
the suspected distal periphery of the groundwater plume. One boring will be situated near the
suspected extreme down-gradient position, and the other boring will be located southwest of
the distal end of the plume. Soil and groundwater samples will be collected at discrete
intervals in both borings, and the samples will be submitted for analytical testing for the
possible presence of diesel range petroleum hydrocarbons.
2.1 Field Work
The field work associated with this work plan will consist of mobilizing to the site with a
Geo-Probe drilling rig and advancing two soil borings at designated locations for the purpose
of obtaining soil and groundwater samples.
2.1.1 Geo-Probe Soil Borings
A group of two Geo-Probe soil borings will be advanced about 10 feet into the saturated zone
to an anticipated depth of 20 feet below grade. We assume that groundwater will be
encountered at±9-11 feet below grade. These borings will be located as follows:
• SB-13 to be located northwest of MW-6 to determine the distal extent of the groundwater
plume,
• SB-14 to be located southwest of MW- to define the southwesterly limit of the distal end
of the plume.
Both soil and groundwater samples will be collected from three discrete points in each
boring. The sample points will be located (as nearly as possible) at the capillary fringe, from
4 to 5 feet below first water, and from about 10 feet beneath first water(est. +20').
The soil borings will be drilled using 1.5" outside diameter Geo-Probe drilling equipment
owned and operated by V & W Drilling (C-57 License #720904). Both borings will be
advanced to a total depth of about 20 feet below grade. Upon reaching total depth in each
boring and collecting a final soil and groundwater sample, the boring will be filled to grade
with neat cement.
The Geo-Probe is a truck mounted drilling system that uses direct push methodology to
collect soil and groundwater samples. Four foot long by 1.5 inch diameter stainless steel rods
are pushed or hammered into the ground using a hydraulic ram or the hydraulically actuated
hammer mounted on the ram. Soil samples are collected using a 1.5 foot long by 1.5 inch
inside diameter drive sampler lined with a plastic sample sleeve.
