Work Plan- Site Characterization II Page 4
Former Karlson Trucking Facility
Project No. 191.2
December 6, 1999
ram. Soil samples are collected using a 1.5 foot long by 1.5 inch inside
diameter drive sampler lined with a plastic sample sleeve. This device is
activated by removing a retaining bolt from the top of the device by inserting
rods through the hollow stem of the probe rods. Removing this retaining bolt
allows the drive point to retract through the sampling tube and a sample to
be collected.
Groundwater samples will be collected using the Geo-Probe's groundwater
sampling device. This consists of a four foot long hollow rod fitted with a
drive point which is attached to the end of the Geo-Probe stem. This rod is
driven four feet into groundwater and retracted to expose the stainless steel
screen inside of the device.
Groundwater samples will be obtained by oscillating a clean dedicated
section of polyethylene tubing, fitted with a stainless steel check valve,
inserted inside of the hollow stem of the Geo-Probe. This causes groundwater
to rise to the surface.
2.1.2 Hollow Stem Auger Soil Borings
Once the Geo-Probe soil and groundwater results have been obtained and
interpreted, Geo-Phase Environmental Inc. proposes to install a group of 2
hollow stem auger soil borings into groundwater to an anticipated depth of 20
feet below grade. It is assumed that groundwater will be encountered at 9-11
feet below grade. These borings will be located as follows:
• One well downgradient from MW-4, and
• One well southwest of MW-2.
(The exact location will be determined based upon the results of the Geo-
Probe soil boring installation).
These borings will be drilled using a 8.0" outside diameter hollow stem auger
owned and operated by V & W Drilling Inc., of Rio Vista, CA (License
#720904). Soil samples will be collected for geological and analytical
evaluation at five foot intervals using a 2.0 inch diameter by 1.5 foot long
hammer driven California Split Spoon sampling device fitted with three 2 by
6 inch stainless steel liners.
2.1.3 Geology
A detailed log will be made of each boring. The information to be noted
include such data as sample depths, blow counts from hammer driven
2937 Veneman Avenue, Suite B240 Geo-Phase Environmental Inc.
