Work Plan- Site Characterization II Page 3
Former Karlson Trucking Facility
Project No. 191.2
December 6, 1999
2.0 PROPOSED INVESTIGATION
Geo-Phase Environmental Inc. proposes to install four Geo-Probe soil borings
to collect soil and groundwater samples from the suspected periphery of the
groundwater plume, in both the upgradient and downgradient directions. A
fifth Geo-Probe soil boring is proposed in the vicinity of MW-4 to determine if
groundwater contamination is limited to near surface groundwater in the
vicinity of the capillary fringe. It is also proposed that the well adjacent to
the seepage pit be closed. Finally, based upon the reconnaissance data from
the Geo-Probe borings, two additional groundwater monitoring wells would
be constructed, developed and sampled along with the existing four
groundwater wells.
2.1 Field Work
2.1.1 Geo-Probe Soil Borings
Geo-Phase Environmental Inc. proposes to install a group of four Geo-Probe
soil borings into groundwater to an anticipated depth of 20 feet below grade
and one boring to 30 feet below grade. It is assumed that groundwater will
be encountered at ±9-11 feet below grade. These borings will be located as
follows:
• Two located northwest of MW-4 to determine the distal extent of the
groundwater plume,
• Two located upgradient of the suspected point of release southwest of
MW-2,
• One adjacent to MW-4 to determine the vertical extent of groundwater
contamination. This boring will be completed to an anticipated depth of
30 feet below grade, with groundwater samples collected at 15, 20, 25 and
30 feet below grade.
The Geo-Probe soil borings will be drilled using 1.5" outside diameter Geo-
Probe drilling equipment owned and operated by V & W Drilling (C-57
License #720904). Upon reaching total depth in each boring and collecting a
final soil and groundwater sample, the boring was filled to grade with neat
' cement.
The Geo-Probe is a truck mounted drilling system that uses direct push
methodology to collect soil and groundwater samples. Four foot long by 1.5
inch diameter stainless steel rods are pushed or hammered into the ground
using a hydraulic ram or the hydraulically actuated hammer mounted on the
2937 Veneman Avenue, Suite B240 Geo-Phase Environmental Inc.
