28 August 2003
AGE -NC Project No. 03-1063
organic vapors (OV) using a photo -ionization detector (PID). Soil considered to be "clean" was
segregated from soil that had the presence of OVs or petroleum odors ("contaminated"). Soil was
excavated to a depth of approximately 14 feet bsg. Ground water was not encountered during
excavation, although soil encountered at the bottom of the excavation was semi -saturated. OVs were
not detected during excavation; however, hydrocarbons odors were noted at depths between
approximately 8 feet bsg and 14 feet bsg.
3.2. SOIL SAMPLING COLLECTION
A total of six soil samples were collected from the floor and sidewalls of the excavation using the
backhoe bucket. Each discrete soil sample was collected using a metric soil sampler. The soil
sampler was loaded with two clean, 2 -inch by 3 -inch diameter brass sleeves. Upon collection, the
ends of the lead sleeve were covered with Teflon sheets, capped and sealed with tape. Each sample
sleeve was labeled with an individual identification, depth, time, date and sampler's initials.
Appropriately sealed and labeled samples were placed in a chilled container under ice and
transported under chain -of -custody procedure to a state -certified laboratory.
Soil samples were not collected from the excavated (stockpiled) soil.
3.3. ANALYTICAL PROTOCOL
The excavation soil samples were analyzed for the following constituents:
• Total petroleum hydrocarbons as hydraulic fluid (TPH-hf) in accordance with EPA Method
8015 Modified;
• Methyl -tertiary butyl ether (MTBE), Benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene and total xylenes
(BTEX) in accordance with EPA Method SW846/8021; and
• Cadmium, Chromium, Lead, Nickel and Zinc in accordance with EPA Method
SW846/601013. 11
3.4. EXCAVATION BACKFILLING AND SOIL DISPOSAL
After completion of all excavation and sampling activities, the excavation was backfilled and
compacted using a combination of clean fill sand and "clean" overburden material segregated during
excavation. A total of approximately 40 tons of clean imported material was used for backfill.
Advanced GeoEnvironmental, Inc.
