Technical Description
TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION
of the Bio-Pure® Intermittent-Cycle, Extended-Aeration System (ICEAS)
Prepared as supporting documentation for the Report of Waste Discharge Project Report
for the Castello Estates Project, San Joaquin County, California
The Bio-Pure ICEAS system is a complete-mix, nitrification/denitrification, modified-batch
process for the treatment of domestic wastewater.
by
Lloyd D. Hedenland, Sr, et al
NOTE: 7H Technical Services Group, Inc. has developed modifications to the basic Bio-
Pure system. All patents, trademark registration, processes, technologies, and technical
data are considered proprietary by 7H and 7H restricts their use except where written
permission is granted.
While this technical description is in considerable detail, 7-H considers the detail to be necessary
to adequately depict the capability, reliability and effectiveness to provide wastewater treatment
for the subject Castillo Estates Project in San Joaquin County, California. And, in particular, the
effectiveness of removing Total Nitrogen, prior to disposal, to preclude the elevation of Nitrates
in the ground water.
TECHNICAL CERTIFICATION
A 3,000-gpd, secondary-level Bio-Pure system has been tested by the National Sanitation Foun-
dation (NSF). The complete test report, with letter of certification, is available from 7H upon re-
quest. The testing procedure used was NSF-C-9. NSF's Standard 40 was not used, as it is limited
to systems of less than 1,500-gpd flows.
The biological processes within Bio-Pure systems, regardless of size, are the same. Over the
years, improvements have been incorporated to take advantage of state-of-the-art equipment de-
velopment. This is the case in the areas of process control through the use of 7-H's TC2K Com-
puterized Monitoring and Control System, final water polishing, and to incorporate additional en-
hancements to the system's ability to consistently produce high-quality output systems while still
requiring minimal operator skills and low maintenance. Low maintenance is of prime importance,
as the Bio-Pure systems with computerized monitoring are essentially designed for reduced opera-
tor attendance.
ACTIVATED SLUDGE
In order to provide continuity to this description, it is necessary to review some basic biology
physics as applied to the treatment of wastewater.
Although activated sludge is a biological process, biology did not influence treatment system de-
sign or operation until the past few decades. While the basic process is not new, there are new
developments and refinements continuously being made in research laboratories and in the field
which directly affect the designs of high-quality, activated-sludge-based, batching-type treatment
systems. As opposed to municipal flowthrough-type systems which process wastewater on a con-
tinuous-flow basis, batching systems hold all wastewater until that specific portion of the treat-
ment process is complete before releasing it to the next processing stage.
1
J
