as the previous set will provide an insight into the temporal distribution
of product at the site.
5.2 Task 2 - Soil Sampling and Installation of Additional Monitoring Wells
Existing data indicate that fuel components may be present in the
soil and groundwater located between wells 9 and 1. This needs to be
investigated and additional data collected to estimate the areal extent of
hydrocarbons which may be floating on the water table.
It is proposed to drill 18 soil borings. These borings are to be
drilled in the approximate locations as shown on Drawing 7 so that the
lateral and longitudinal distribution of fuel components can be better
assessed. Additional borings may be installed if the proposed soil borings
show visible fuel product contamination.
The boreholes will be drilled with a standard (8-inch diameter)
hollow-stem continuous flight auger. The initial soil sample will be
collected at a depth interval of 0.5 to 2 feet, followed by samples
collected at 2 1/2-foot intervals until the water table is reached. A
final sample will be collected 5-foot below the water table. Samples will
be over-driven to obtain three 6-inch liner/containers of soil. The
contents of one of the continers collected will be examined both visually
and 1,41th an HNu photo-ionization detector. If elevated fuel product
concentrations are detected in this subsample the second subsample will be
sent to a certified laboratory for analysis and the third sample frozen for
later analysis. Soil subsamples suspected of containing elevated
concentrations of fuel product will be analyzed for BTX and TPH (EPA Method
8020) and organic lead.
If high concentrations of hydrocarbons are encountered, several
boreholes (a maximum of 3) may be converted into monitoring wells. It is
5-2 iiir;
