P. 5 LEVINEFRICKE Extraction Wells The two extraction wells proposed south of Cook Road (see Figure 3) will be used to lower ground-water levels sufficiently to induce floating petroleum product to flow towards these two wells. Petroleum skimming equipment will be positioned at the water/ petroleum interface to extract the floating product. The third well proposed on Arcady property will be used as a product-only extraction point to accelerate product recovery in lower-permeability zones. The wells will likely be completed with 5-inch diameter PVC casing slotted from about 3 feet above to 10 feet below the existing ground-water level. Clean Monterey Number 3 sand (or equivalent) will be used as backfill material in the wells to a height of approximately 1 foot above the slotted casing interval. Bentonite will then be placed in the annular space above the sand pack to isolate the perforated interval and surrounding sand from overlying soil and cement grout. Ground-water and product pumps will be installed in the two wells south of Cook Road. These pumps will be controlled by sets of sensors and timers which are triggered when appropriate water/product levels are reached within the individual well. A product-only pump will be installed in the extraction well to be located on Arcady property. It is anticipated that the two combination wells will be operated at a ground-water extraction rate of about 2.5 gpm each, creating a depression in the water level near the extraction wells of about 2 to 3 feet. Water level declines away from these extraction wells will be less. Product extracted from these and the product-only well will be stored in a temporary on-site storage container for subsequent pick-up by SPPL for recycling. Ground-water removed from the two wells will be pumped to an on-site treatment facility located on adjacent agricultural property. Treatmti cisimindiatat The ground-water treatment facility will likely consist of a storage pond with aerating spray nozzles to remove dissolved petroleum constituents prior to discharge into Trapper Slough. RWQCB and Air Quality Management District requirements will be integrated into the final design parameters. After approval of the preliminary design by both SPPL and regulatory agencies, final design of the extraction system will be accomplished. Plans and Specifications will be prepared, as necessary, to facilitate contractor installation. Final reports will be prepared, as necessary, for regulatory agency approval and files. -4-
