May 23, 1986
86-1114.21
Southern Pacific Pipelines, Inc.
Attention: Mr. John J. Spinelli
Subject: Work Plan
Page 2
north of the new pipe section.
M2 item 4: We have considerable sieve analysis data for soils in the Holt
area. Filter criteria and screen slot size will be based on thorough
evaluation of material properties.
M1 item 5, M2 item 5: Since the wells are shallow development by
mechanical pumps will be more efficient and will be done.
M1 item 6: Two-inch wells require much less volume of water to be purged
for proper development (approximately one fourth) compared to four-inch
wells. They also have a much quicker response time to water level
fluctuations in the aquifer. Since no difficulty is anticipated in
development of two-inch wells at this site, the two-inch wells were
proposed and will be used.
M2 - item 6: The Diedrich sampler holds three 6-inch liners. Each drive
sample yields three soil samples. In case of "split" samples, the two
adjacent liners (the middle and bottom) will be used for testing. One will
be sent to the main contract laboratory and other will be sent to another
contract laboratory for QA/QC purposes. We hope this explanation clarifies
the intent in the last sentence in Section A.1.3. of the Work Plan.
M1 item 7: Prior to sampling wells will be purged until readings of
temperature, pH, and specific conductance are stabilized. Samples will be
collected with a teflon bailer.
M1 item 8: At this point three monitoring wells are planned. Additional
monitoring wells, if needed, will be recommended and constructed.
MI item 9, M2 item 7: Volatile aromatics do degrade the PVC in time. If
the purpose of the monitoring wells was long term monitoring of groundwater
quality in a waste management pond, then stainless steel or teflon screens
and pipes would have been recommended. However, for the short duration of
this project we feel PVC will maintain its integrity. In a number of
similar projects we have seen that PVC pipes and screens function properly
for two to three years. We therefore recommend to use PVC in this project.
M2 item 8: The phone number for fire department, ambulance/paramedics in
Stockton/Holt area is 464-4646. The nearest hospital is San Joaquin
General Hospital, Tel. 982-1800. This will be added to the list of
emergency numbers in SSOP.
M1 item 10, M2 item 9: A description of the disposal of the collected
