Section 2: Field Activities
2.1 Field Preparation
Field preparation includes the following:
Develop a site-specific Health and Safety Plan (HASP). The HASP for this investigation is
under separate cover, and will be maintained onsite at all times.
Obtain boring permits from San Joaquin County Environmental Health Department.
Make all necessary notifications and interactions with BNSF to comply with BNSF and FRA
railroad worker protection requirements. Confirm track protection with the Yard.
Mark the boring locations with white paint or stakes and notify Underground Service Alert
(USA) at least 48 hours in advance.
Local BNSF employees in charge of utilities will be notified of the sample locations to
provide knowledge of known utilities.
In addition, the potential presence of underground pipelines in the proposed drilling areas
will be assessed by a private contractor using non-invasive geophysical means.
The drilling contractor will provide a vacuum truck (an "air knife" device) to evacuate each
borehole to 7 feet bgs. If any utilities are revealed, the soil boring will be relocated and the
air-knife process repeated. Soil will be replaced and compacted in the air-knife borehole to
provide support for the drilling rods.
Subcontract with a drilling contractor licensed in California. Kennedy/Jenks will confirm that
the subcontractor meets insurance requirements and the personnel have the complete
BNSF and FRA training.
Arrange with a state-certified laboratory for analysis of the samples.
2.2 Soil Boring and Sample Collection
2.2.1 Soil Boring Locations
The proposed soil borings are shown on Figure 2. As explained above, based upon the results
of the LIE program, two soil borings are proposed: KB-03 near LIF #4 to assess the vertical
extent of LNAPL in the soil column and obtain soil samples and a groundwater sample; and
KB-04 at the excavation shown in the vicinity of the former locomotive release.
Additional Soil and Groundwater Sampling Work Plan,
BNSF Mormon Yard, Stockton CA

Page 5
\INvybnsf2 bnsfwp wp1201811899020 00_mormon_yard1work_plan_x112018 mormon yard sampling wp_mwm doc
