ON-SITE CONTROL
The Site Safety Officer will coordinate site access control and security. An exclusion
zone will be established approximately 20 feet around excavation location work areas.
No unauthorized person shall be allowed within this exclusion area.
4.0. HAZARD EVALUATION
The following substance(s) or hazards are known or suspected to be on site.
SUBSTANCES INVOLVED: CONCENTRATIONS:
Benzene Up to 0.46 mg/kg / 334 pg/I
Toluene Up to 2.8 mg/kg / 270 pg/I
Ethyl-benzene Up to 2.6 mg/kg / 1914 pg/I
Total xylenes Up to 19 mg/kg / 964 pg/I
MTBE Not Detected / Not Detected
TPH-Diesel N/A
TPH-Gaosline Up to 230 mg/kg / 3,970 pg/I
The primary hazards of each are identified as follows:
1. Hydrocarbon fuels - Components of fuels are colorless liquids with strong aromatic
petroleum hydrocarbon-like odors. They are flammable and have low solubility in water.
Exposure to these materials in excess of recommended exposure limits can cause mild
eye, nose, and throat irritation and can produce a narcotic effect on the central nervous
system. Symptoms of exposure at these concentrations include headache, nausea,
drowsiness, dizziness, and loss of coordination. Certain components of gasoline (BTEX
etc.) are known or suspected carcinogens.
The additional potential hazards include: Slip-trip-fall hazards, noise, heavy equipment
(i.e., drill riq, other traffic), vibration hazards, traffic hazards, etc.
5.0. PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT
Based on evaluation of potential hazards, the following levels of personal protection
have been designated for the applicable work areas or task:
