DATE: 4/1 /93
SUBJECT: Past practices
SITE NAME: California Cedar Products Company EPA ID: CAD 009157876
DISCUSSION: According to Mr. Gonzalez, the California Cedar Products Company (Cal
Cedar) site has been paved since 1921 in the area where hazardous substances and wastes were
used and stored. Wastes generated from past practices were hauled off site approximately every
90 days.
Currently, wastes generated at the Cal Cedar site are being hauled off site within 90 days by
Falcon Energy Associates, a hazardous waste hauler.
When cedar ash is mixed with water and allowed to remain for a period of time, it creates a
substance known as caustic pot ash. This ash is high in pH and is corrosive.
Ash generated from the wood scrubber is dry and is called fly ash. This is non-ha7ardous.
The Duraflarne log production began sometime in 1968. The logs were made from a mixture of
sawdust, petroleum wax, copper sulfate and ammonium chloride. In 1993, copper sulfate and
ammonium chloride were eliminated from the production of the Duraflame log.
DATE:

Contact Report • Gonzalez • 4/93 Printed on 50% recycled paper ,](.9
