Hazardous Materials Training for Acetylene
Last Date Created/Modified:August 24, 2021
Hazard Identification
Acetylene is a flammable gas under pressure and can be explosive when it mixes with air. May cause
dizziness and drowsiness.Acetylene is colorless gas with a garlic-like odor.
Potential Health Effects
Inhalation
Acetylene is an asphyxiant. Moderate concentrations may cause headaches, drowsiness, dizziness,
excess salivation, vomiting and unconsciousness. The lack of oxygen can kill.
Swallowing
Frostbite of the lips and mouth may result from contact with the liquid (acetone). If swallowed, the
liquid may cause nausea.
Eye Contact
Vapor containing acetone may cause irritation. Liquid (acetone) may cause irritation and frostbite.
Hazards of Materials
Fumes and gases can be dangerous to your health and may cause serious lung disease. Keep your head
out of the fumes. Do not breathe fumes and gases caused by the process. Use enough ventilation, local
exhaust, or both to keep fumes and gases from your breathing zone and the general area.
Emergency Response
In the event of fire, evacuate all personnel from the danger area. Remove ignition sources if without
risk. Remove all acetylene from the fire area if without risk.
Accidental Release Measures
Steps to Be Taken if Material is Released/Spilled
Immediately evacuate all personnel from the danger area. Remove all sources of ignition if without risk.
Shut off flow if without risk. Ventilate area or move cylinder to a well-ventilated area.
Methods for Safe Handling
Use a suitable hand truck to move cylinders; do not drag, roll, slide or drop. All piped acetylene systems
and associated equipment must be grounded. Open acetylene cylinder valves the minimum amount
required for acceptable flow.
Never attempt to lift a cylinder by its cap. Never insert an object into the cap openings; doing so may
damage the valve and cause a leak. If the valve is hard to open, discontinue use and contact your
supplier.
Store and use with adequate ventilation. Separate flammable cylinders from oxygen, chlorine and other
oxidizers. Secure cylinders upright to keep them from falling or being knocked over.
Pg. 1
