Hazardous Materials Training for Propane
Last Date Created/Modified:August 25, 2021
Hazard Identification
Propane is an extremely flammable gas.
Potential Health Effects
Inhalation
Hazards of Materials
Propane, under pressure may explode if heated. Keep away from heat/open flames/hot surfaces.
Emergency Response
Evacuate the area promptly.
Accidental Release Measures
Steps to Be Taken if Material is Released/Spilled
If a gas fire is started due to a leak, then do not extinguish, unless the leak can be stopped safely.
Eliminate all ignition sources (flares, sparks or flames in the immediate area) if safe to do so.
If a leak or spill has not ignited, use water spray to disperse the vapors and to protect personnel
attempting to stop the leak. Prevent runoff from fire control from entering streams, sewers or drinking
water supply.
Don't breath gas and avoid prolonged exposure.
Ventilation should be used to restore oxygen concentrations to safe levels. Keep unnecessary personnel
away.
Methods for Safe Handling
Propane cylinders should be kept away from heat/sparks/open flames and hot surfaces. Smoking
should not be permitted where cylinders are stored.
Do not enter storage areas or confined spaces unless adequately ventilated. Store in a cool, dry place
out of direct sunlight.
Personal Protective Equipment
Eye/Face Protection
Wear approved safety glasses or goggles.
Skin/Hand Protection
Wear appropriate chemical resistant gloves. Neoprine or nitrile gloves are recommended.
Pg. 1
