TO: LINDA KNOWLES, DAMERON HOSPITAL
FROM: KASEY FOLEY, PUBLIC HEALTH SERVICES OF SAN JOAQUIN
COUNTY, ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH DIVISION
t Ui:W MW%
On September 15, 1992, Nancy Smith of the Department of Health Services, Medical Waste
Management Program notified Public Health Services of San Joaquin County, Environmental
Health Division that the letter from the Department of Health Services dated July 20, 1992
regarding the disposal of placentas is being updated. Nancy Smith stated that the previous
interpretation from the Department of Health Services was that placentas were to be
disposed either through incineration or interment. The Department of Health Services has
reconsidered this position and will write a new interpretation within the next two weeks
indicating that placentas that have undergone treatment through a steam sterilizer will be
allowed to go to a landfill for disposal.
