TO: LINDA KNOWLES, DAMERON HOSPITAL <br />FROM: KASEY FOLEY, PUBLIC HEALTH SERVICES OF SAN JOAQUIN <br />COUNTY, ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH DIVISION <br />t Ui:W MW% <br />On September 15, 1992, Nancy Smith of the Department of Health Services, Medical Waste <br />Management Program notified Public Health Services of San Joaquin County, Environmental <br />Health Division that the letter from the Department of Health Services dated July 20, 1992 <br />regarding the disposal of placentas is being updated. Nancy Smith stated that the previous <br />interpretation from the Department of Health Services was that placentas were to be <br />disposed either through incineration or interment. The Department of Health Services has <br />reconsidered this position and will write a new interpretation within the next two weeks <br />indicating that placentas that have undergone treatment through a steam sterilizer will be <br />allowed to go to a landfill for disposal. <br />
